TEN THINGS THAT MIGHT SURPRISE YOU ABOUT SONG DOCTOR

  1. It is NOT just one person telling you what they don’t like about your song
  2. It IS a group of songwriters that gather in the hopes of giving each other positive, gentle, honest feedback about their song..with the hopes that you will do the same for them.
  3. It is nerve racking the first time. I have seen songwriters at every level get very nervous and have a hard time the first time they are there. It’s because everyone is listening. Nobody pays your nerves any attention. It happened to most all of us already.  It’s good to get shook once in awhile. It is over in a couple of minutes..and honestly the second time a breeze.
  4. It’s becomes easier because you realize it’s not YOU that is being critiqued. It is not your life, what kind of singer you are, how well you play your instrument, if we like your hair color….. it is just the song. And it is a room full of songwriters. Some are listening for the lyrics, some are only into the melody, if they believed it/felt it, sometimes the conversation will go from song title to bridges. Your song becomes the conduit for conversation among songwriters.
  5. There are songwriters that have had a lot of commercial success and some that started writing yesterday. You will find all ages and all genes. Every writer is welcome. And it’s not all bad we also point out our favorite parts of the songs.
  6. Critiques are helpful for songwriters to get a better song.. but it isn’t just the song that is being critiqued. It’s your next song.
  7. Sometimes songwriters will learn more about their writing from critiquing someones song that is in a genre that they would never have written in or a subject that they have no interest in.  Because they want to be helpful and articulate what they think works in the song and what might not they are forced to think out of the box. After  a dozen or more songs a night it’s easy to pick up some new tools to both listen and write with.
  8. There is a synergy like none other when you have a room full of songwriters. It’s good for the mind, heart and the soul.. It’s serious, it’s so tender, it’s raw, it’s funny, it’s heartbreaking… all the things we get to feel hearing all of these songs one after another in the presence with other artists.
  9. Activity creates activity… being around creative people is contagious and you might find yourself writing more.
  10. IT’S FUN!
